Play Therapy

Children aged 6 – 13

Play therapy is a powerful tool for understanding and working with children’s emotions. Play therapy views play as a child’s natural language—a means of expressing unconscious thoughts, conflicts, and emotions that they may not have the words to articulate.

How Play Therapy Works

In play therapy, the therapist provides a safe, consistent, and nurturing space where the child can freely engage in symbolic play. Through toys, storytelling, drawings, and role-playing, the child reveals internal struggles, early relational patterns, and unresolved emotional conflicts. The therapist carefully observes themes that emerge in play, interpreting them within the context of the child’s developmental history and relational experiences.

The goal is to help the child process difficult emotions, integrate traumatic experiences, and develop healthier coping mechanisms. Unlike directive forms of therapy, play therapy does not focus on immediate behavioral change but rather on understanding and restructuring underlying emotional patterns that contribute to distress.

Who Can Benefit?

Psychodynamic play therapy is particularly beneficial for children experiencing:
✔️ Anxiety, depression, or emotional distress
✔️ Trauma or loss
✔️ Attachment difficulties
✔️ Behavioral or relational struggles
✔️ Unresolved feelings of anger, fear, or sadness

Rather than focusing solely on symptom reduction, play therapy seeks to address the root causes of emotional difficulties, helping children develop a stronger sense of self and healthier ways of relating to the world. It is a deeply insightful and relational process, fostering emotional growth and resilience that lasts beyond childhood.
